Ronnie O’Sullivan labels Luke Littler a ‘freak’ as he makes comparisons in snooker

Ronnie O’Sullivan feels that talk of snooker searching for its own version of Luke Littler is perhaps unrealistic given the darting superstar’s generational talent.

Ronnie O’Sullivan has described teenage darts sensation Luke Littler as a “freak” talent while discussing whether snooker can ever produce a young star with the same explosive impact on the sport.

Littler has transformed darts over the past two years with his fearless performances, huge television audiences, and remarkable rise at such a young age. His success has led many fans and pundits to wonder whether snooker is capable of discovering a similar teenage sensation who could attract a new generation of viewers. However, O’Sullivan believes comparisons are difficult because Littler’s talent is exceptionally rare.

Speaking about the young darts star, O’Sullivan explained that athletes like Littler do not appear often in any sport. The seven-time world champion said the teenager possesses a unique level of confidence and natural ability that separates him from ordinary prospects.

O’Sullivan admitted that snooker has talented young players coming through the ranks, but he feels the structure and demands of snooker are very different from darts. According to “The Rocket,” it is much harder for teenage players to dominate immediately in snooker because of the mental pressure, tactical complexity, and long learning process required to succeed at the top level.

The snooker icon pointed out that players often need years of experience before they can consistently compete with elite professionals. He believes that while exciting prospects continue to emerge, expecting someone to burst onto the scene in the same way Littler has done in darts may simply be unrealistic.

O’Sullivan’s comments reflect the growing admiration for Littler across the sporting world. Since his breakthrough, the young Englishman has become one of the most talked-about athletes in Britain, attracting new fans to darts and helping the sport enjoy increased mainstream popularity. His rapid rise has also brought comparisons with young stars from other sports, including football, tennis, and snooker.

Despite his praise for Littler, O’Sullivan stressed that snooker remains in a healthy position and still possesses strong personalities and world-class talent. Players such as Judd Trump, Luca Brecel, and Zhao Xintong have all helped bring excitement and attacking flair to the modern game.

However, O’Sullivan believes that sports should avoid forcing comparisons between athletes from completely different disciplines. In his view, Littler’s impact is special precisely because it is so unusual.

The 50-year-old has never been afraid to speak openly about the future of snooker, often calling for innovation and new formats to help the game evolve. Yet even he accepts that certain talents come along only once in a generation.

For O’Sullivan, Luke Littler is one of those rare sporting figures — a player whose rise cannot easily be copied or recreated. While snooker continues searching for its next superstar, the seven-time world champion believes fans should appreciate Littler for what he truly is: a unique phenomenon in modern sport.
