Lindsey Vonn Reveals ‘First-Time’ Decision After Nearly Losing Her Leg.

Lindsey Vonn has opened up about a deeply personal milestone following a life-threatening injury that nearly cost her leg during the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The 41-year-old arrived at the Games in Milan-Cortina already dealing with a torn ACL sustained just days earlier in Switzerland. However, her situation worsened dramatically during the downhill event when she struck a gate early in her run, triggering a violent crash that required her to be airlifted to hospital.

Medical evaluations revealed not only a broken leg but multiple complex fractures involving her tibia, fibula, and tibial plateau. More critically, she developed compartment syndrome—a dangerous condition where swelling restricts blood flow to muscles and nerves. Emergency surgery, including a fasciotomy performed by Team USA surgeon Tom Hackett, ultimately saved her leg from amputation.

In the days that followed, Vonn underwent at least five surgeries within a 10-day span, including an extensive six-hour reconstructive operation in mid-February. After being discharged, she revealed she was confined to a wheelchair, with doctors later advising that she would need crutches for a minimum of two months during recovery.

Now, about six weeks after the crash, Vonn is beginning to show encouraging signs of progress. She recently marked a personal milestone by wearing makeup for the first time since the accident, sharing the moment on social media. Her rehabilitation has also started gradually, including light activity such as a brief five-minute session on a stationary bike.

While some questioned the pace of her recovery, Vonn clarified that early, controlled movement is essential to prevent stiffness and long-term loss of mobility.

As for her competitive future, she remains undecided. For now, her priority is rehabilitation, with any decision about returning to competition postponed. Looking ahead, the 2030 Winter Olympics remain a distant possibility one that could see her attempt a remarkable comeback in her mid-40s.
