Stephen Hendry refuses to copy Ronnie O’Sullivan as the Rocket takes unusual step

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry has revealed that he has no intention of following the same path as Ronnie O’Sullivan, despite continuing fascination around the Rocket’s unusual habits away from the table.

O’Sullivan, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in snooker history, has often approached the sport differently from his rivals. Reports in recent months have highlighted how the Rocket prefers to distance himself from fellow professionals during tournaments, even choosing to stay in separate hotels rather than alongside the rest of the tour. The decision has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike, with many wondering whether isolation helps maintain his intense focus.

Hendry, however, insists that such an approach would never have suited him during his dominant years at the top of the game.

Speaking while reflecting on the mentality required to succeed in elite snooker, the Scot explained that every player has their own methods for handling pressure, preparation, and competition. While he respects O’Sullivan’s choices, Hendry believes personality plays a huge role in determining what works best.

“I could never do that,” Hendry said when discussing the Rocket’s preference for keeping his distance from rivals during major events. “Ronnie is very different. He likes his own space and clearly feels comfortable preparing in his own way. But I always enjoyed being around the atmosphere of tournaments.”

Hendry dominated snooker throughout the 1990s, winning seven world titles and redefining standards within the sport. His ruthless approach and relentless consistency made him the benchmark for an entire generation. Yet even with all his success, he admits that O’Sullivan remains unique in the way he manages both his game and his career.

The pair have long been linked in debates over snooker’s greatest-ever player. O’Sullivan has matched Hendry’s seven Crucible crowns and surpassed many of his other records, including ranking titles and century breaks. Despite their rivalry across different eras, Hendry has repeatedly praised the Rocket’s extraordinary natural talent.

Still, the Scot believes there is no single formula for greatness.

“What worked for me wouldn’t necessarily work for Ronnie, and vice versa,” Hendry added. “That’s what makes top-level sport fascinating. Players find their own edge.”

O’Sullivan’s unconventional behavior has often attracted headlines throughout his career. From experimenting with different cues to taking extended breaks from competition, the Englishman has rarely followed the traditional route expected of elite athletes. His recent decision to avoid staying with fellow players only adds to the aura surrounding one of snooker’s most unpredictable icons.

Many within the sport believe those habits help preserve his longevity. Even in the later stages of his career, O’Sullivan remains capable of producing breathtaking performances that few players can match.

Hendry, meanwhile, continues to enjoy his role as a pundit and ambassador for snooker. Although he briefly attempted a comeback in recent years, he appears comfortable watching the modern game from the commentary box rather than trying to emulate O’Sullivan’s ever-evolving lifestyle.

And while the Rocket continues to do things his own way, Hendry seems perfectly happy sticking to his own philosophy — one built on discipline, routine, and a style that once made him virtually unbeatable.
