Tadej Pogačar has spoken candidly about his relationship with fellow Slovenian cycling star Primož Roglič ahead of their latest Grand Tour showdown at the Vuelta a España.
Roglič was already Slovenia’s leading cyclist when Pogačar dramatically overtook him in the final stages of the 2020 Tour de France. Pogačar produced a stunning performance in the individual time trial at La Planche des Belles Filles to overturn Roglič’s lead and claim his first Tour de France victory.
However, Pogačar admitted that the result was emotionally complicated because Roglič was someone he admired greatly. He recalled how the entire country had expected Roglič to win and said he felt sympathy when he saw his compatriot cross the finish line.
Pogačar explained that he had mentally prepared himself to finish second and would have been satisfied with that result. Even after winning the yellow jersey, he did not feel as celebratory as he might have expected because of Roglič’s disappointment.
Despite that historic rivalry, Pogačar continues to regard Roglič as a legend and an inspiration. He praised Roglič’s achievements and influence on Slovenian cycling, describing him as an idol for younger riders.
Pogačar also recalled watching Roglič’s early Giro d’Italia performances and being amazed by how quickly he established himself among the sport’s elite.
Now, the two Slovenian stars are preparing to meet again at the 2026 Vuelta a España, which begins in Monaco on August 22. Roglič enters the race as a four-time Vuelta champion, while Pogačar is seeking the red jersey for the first time.
The upcoming battle therefore carries an interesting twist: Pogačar has enormous respect for the rider whose Tour de France dream he famously ended six years ago, but both will now be competing for the same Grand Tour prize once again.
