Paige Bueckers endured one of the toughest games of her young WNBA career during the Dallas Wings’s 86-69 loss to the Atlanta Dream on May 22.
Known for her consistency and all-around offensive ability, Bueckers struggled throughout the night, finishing with just seven points while shooting 3-for-13 from the field and 1-for-6 from beyond the arc. The performance marked the lowest-scoring outing of her WNBA career so far.
Atlanta’s defense played a major role in limiting the rookie guard, making life difficult for her from start to finish. Still, seeing Bueckers held to only seven points stood out given her usual production.
The frustrating evening took another strange turn in the third quarter. After a non-shooting foul was called against Atlanta while Bueckers drove toward the basket, she lost control of the ball following the whistle and repeatedly clapped her hands in frustration. One of the officials responded by issuing her a technical foul, a decision that quickly sparked debate online.
Bueckers appeared stunned by the call and immediately approached the referee to question it. Video clips of the exchange circulated on social media, with many fans and analysts expressing confusion over the technical.
Wings head coach Jose Fernandez also seemed puzzled by the decision but avoided criticizing the officials afterward. Asked about the technical foul postgame, Fernandez replied that he preferred not to comment because he did not want to be fined.
Dallas will now look to move past the disappointing defeat when the Wings face the New York Liberty on May 24.
