Ronnie O’Sullivan has never been short of rivals willing to speak their mind, and one of the sport’s most outspoken figures once again reignited debate after accusing the seven-time world champion of being “disrespectful” following defeat.
Iranian star Hossein Vafaei made the controversial remarks after a heated clash with O’Sullivan, continuing a rivalry that has produced plenty of tension both on and off the table in recent years. Vafaei has repeatedly criticised the Rocket’s behaviour during matches, and his latest comments ensured the feud stayed firmly in the spotlight.
The relationship between the two players has been frosty since their meeting during German Masters qualifying in 2021. On that occasion, Vafaei accused O’Sullivan of showing a lack of respect after aggressively smashing the reds during a break-off shot. The Iranian claimed the tactic embarrassed him in front of millions of viewers watching back home and insisted it crossed the line of sportsmanship.
That disagreement simmered for months before boiling over again at the World Championship. Vafaei had already stirred headlines by suggesting O’Sullivan should retire from professional snooker, arguing younger players deserved more opportunities. O’Sullivan responded by saying criticism from opponents only motivated him further.
When the pair eventually met at the Crucible, the tension was obvious from the opening frame. Vafaei attempted an ultra-aggressive break-off of his own, widely interpreted as a message aimed directly at the Englishman. Many observers viewed the move as retaliation for the earlier incident between the two players.
After the defeat, however, Vafaei doubled down rather than backing away from the confrontation. Speaking candidly, he again accused O’Sullivan of disrespectful conduct and claimed mind games had become a major part of the Rocket’s approach.
“He disrespected me before,” Vafaei said in comments that quickly circulated around the snooker world. “Play like a man, don’t play mind games.”
The remarks divided opinion among fans and pundits alike. Some supported Vafaei for challenging the sport’s biggest star, while others felt O’Sullivan’s style and personality were part of what has made him such a compelling figure over the last three decades.
O’Sullivan himself appeared relatively unfazed by the criticism. Throughout his career he has frequently brushed aside accusations regarding his attitude, often insisting he simply plays the game instinctively and without concern for outside opinions. The Rocket has also suggested some rivals struggle to cope with his attacking style and unpredictable personality.
Despite the war of words, there have been signs the rivalry may have cooled slightly in recent times. Following one dramatic encounter at the World Open, the pair exchanged a handshake and even shared a brief embrace after Vafaei secured victory. Commentators praised O’Sullivan’s gracious reaction in defeat, viewing it as evidence that mutual respect may still exist beneath the public sparring.
Even so, the story continues to fascinate snooker supporters because it combines two strong personalities unafraid to speak openly. O’Sullivan remains the sport’s biggest attraction, while Vafaei has earned admiration for refusing to be intimidated by one of the game’s greatest-ever players.
As long as both remain active on tour, their rivalry is likely to keep generating headlines.
