Why a driven Ronnie O’Sullivan is meeting all the right criteria at the World Snooker Championship – “He looked fully focused”

Ronnie O’Sullivan produced a commanding display to take a 7-2 advantage over He Guoqiang in the opening session of their World Snooker Championship clash, sparking fresh debate about whether he can secure an eighth title at the Crucible in 2026.

Despite registering just one century break, O’Sullivan impressed with his clinical ability to capitalise on mistakes, repeatedly punishing his opponent to win crucial frames. Analyst Alan McManus noted a clear shift in both his physical condition and mental focus, pointing out that the 50-year-old looked sharper, more composed, and notably “hungry” a trait that has not always been evident in recent seasons.

McManus highlighted that O’Sullivan appeared physically prepared and mentally engaged, carefully managing his tempo and showing strong concentration throughout the session. According to him, the performance ticked key boxes required for a serious title challenge.

This season, O’Sullivan has been selective about his appearances, skipping several ranking events. Although he has not lifted a ranking trophy since the 2024 World Grand Prix, he has still reached finals at the Saudi Arabia Masters and the World Open. His run in China included a remarkable 153 break against Ryan Day, underlining his enduring quality.

Fellow expert Reanne Evans echoed the positive assessment, praising his long potting and overall sharpness. She admitted there had been concerns about a lack of match practice, but said he looked comfortable, competitive, and fully invested, all key indicators that he is capable of producing his best snooker.

Evans added that when O’Sullivan is enjoying himself and feels at ease, his level naturally rises, making him a formidable contender regardless of form percentages. His focus and willingness to compete, she suggested, are often the decisive factors.

The match resumes with its concluding session on April 22, where O’Sullivan will look to convert his strong start into progression to the next round.
