Aaron Hill one win away from achieving Crucible dream.

Just one Irish contender remains in the World Snooker Championship qualifiers after a week of intense action at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Six players from Ireland began the qualifying campaign aiming to secure a place at the Crucible Theatre, but now only Aaron Hill is left in the running. Meanwhile, Mark Allen has already booked his spot in the tournament proper thanks to his top-16 world ranking and will be targeting a deep run at the Crucible.

Several Irish players fell short during qualifying. Jordan Brown was the latest to exit, losing 10-4 to Lei Peifan. Robbie McGuigan also bowed out after a strong showing that saw him reach the penultimate round before losing to Zhou Yuelong. Fergal Quinn’s campaign ended in the second round, while veteran Ken Doherty suffered an early defeat to amateur Patrick Whelan, leaving uncertainty about whether he will continue his professional career.

Hill now carries Irish hopes as he aims to qualify for the World Championship for the first time. If successful, he would become the first player from the Republic of Ireland to reach the Crucible since his coach, Fergal O’Brien, in 2017.

He came agonizingly close last year, narrowly losing 10-9 to Dave Gilbert after leading during their decisive match. By coincidence, Hill will face Gilbert again, with the Englishman having defeated Leone Crowley in the previous round. Crowley impressed in his debut season, winning two matches before his exit and showing strong potential for the future.

At 24, Hill is steadily progressing in his career. After regaining his tour place through Q School in 2022, he has climbed to around 40th in the rankings. While notable wins over top players and two maximum breaks have stood out, his consistent runs to the latter stages of tournaments have been key to his development.

Hill now hopes to convert those quarter-final appearances into deeper runs, which would help him break into the top 32 and eventually the top 16, where players avoid the demanding qualification rounds.

With high stakes and intense pressure on “judgement day,” Hill is determined to make amends for last year’s heartbreak and finally achieve his dream of playing at the Crucible.
