Shiffrin Stands by Kilde After Achilles Tear as Ski Star Faces Another Setback

Mikaela Shiffrin has travelled to Austria to support her fiancé, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, after the Norwegian skiing star suffered another serious injury, with the American describing him as a man with the strongest soul she has ever known.

The alpine skiing world has rallied around Kilde after he ruptured his Achilles tendon during downhill training in Chile on 14 October, dealing another setback to his efforts to return to top-level competition.

Shiffrin, one of the most successful alpine skiers in history, has remained close to her fiancé during the difficult period, offering emotional support as he begins another recovery process.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the American star acknowledged the difficulty of the situation while praising Kilde’s strength and resilience.

“This is hard. And you are tough,” Shiffrin wrote. She added that he needed time to process what had happened and reassured him that the people around him would help him through the challenge.

She also responded to Kilde’s own social media post with an emotional message, describing him as someone with the strongest soul she had ever known.

Kilde Opens Up About His Frustration

Kilde has admitted that the latest injury has been difficult to accept, particularly because he had begun feeling more comfortable on his skis after years of rehabilitation.

In a statement published on 19 October, the 34-year-old explained that his progress had recently given him renewed confidence.

For a long time, his attention had been focused on recovering and returning to the level he had reached before his previous injuries. However, he had recently started skiing faster, improving his performance and enjoying the sport again.

The latest setback has therefore been especially frustrating.

Kilde acknowledged that he was angry, disappointed and emotionally affected by the news, adding that he needed time to process the situation.

Despite his frustration, the Norwegian remains focused on the next stage of his recovery.

He explained that having a clear rehabilitation plan would help him concentrate on what he could control while relying on the people supporting him.

A Difficult Road Back After the 2024 Crash

The Achilles injury comes after Kilde endured a lengthy recovery following a serious crash during the downhill event in Wengen, Switzerland, in January 2024.

That accident left him with significant injuries to his right calf and shoulder. He underwent multiple operations and subsequently experienced a serious infection that complicated his recovery.

His return to competition required an extended period of rehabilitation, making his latest injury particularly difficult to deal with.

Kilde eventually returned to the World Cup circuit during the 2025–26 season, taking important steps towards rebuilding his competitive form.

However, he continued to face challenges as he worked towards regaining his previous level. He also withdrew from the 2026 Winter Olympics after acknowledging that his mind and body were not performing as required.

Before the latest accident, Kilde had been training in Chile as he prepared for another competitive season.

His renewed progress had offered encouragement that he could continue moving forward after the difficult period following his 2024 crash.

The Achilles rupture has now raised fresh questions about his immediate future in the sport, although no confirmed recovery timeline has been announced.

Shiffrin Remains a Source of Support

Shiffrin’s presence has highlighted the importance of support from family and loved ones during Kilde’s recovery.

Photographs shared by the Norwegian show the couple together in Innsbruck, Austria, where Kilde is based. One image shows Shiffrin beside him in a hospital bed, while another captures a lighter moment as she tries his knee scooter.

Her messages have also attracted attention from skiing fans, many of whom have followed the couple’s journey through injury, rehabilitation and their continued commitment to the sport.

The pair have been together since 2021 and announced their engagement in April 2024.

Both athletes understand the demands of elite skiing, where physical preparation, mental resilience and recovery can play significant roles in a competitor’s career.

For Shiffrin, supporting Kilde through this latest challenge has become an important priority as he considers the road ahead.

What Comes Next for Kilde?

Following the injury in Chile, Kilde returned to Innsbruck for further medical examinations and discussions with his medical team about treatment options.

The Norwegian Ski Federation confirmed the Achilles rupture on 15 October but did not provide a specific recovery period.

For now, the immediate focus remains on assessing the injury, establishing the appropriate treatment and beginning the next stage of rehabilitation.

Whether Kilde will be able to return to competitive skiing during the 2026–27 season remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, his determination to focus on the things he can control offers a clear indication of his approach to another difficult chapter.

With Shiffrin and other members of the skiing community offering encouragement, Kilde will have support as he navigates the recovery process.

For the Norwegian star, the immediate challenge is not setting a return date but taking the necessary steps towards recovery.

And as he faces another setback in a career marked by remarkable achievements and difficult comebacks, Shiffrin’s message serves as a reminder that he does not have to face the journey alone.
