Record-breaking Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon snooker star nearing pro tour return after match-fixing ban.

Former teenage snooker sensation Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon could be on the verge of a remarkable return to professional competition after years away from the sport following his match-fixing suspension. Once considered one of the brightest young talents in world snooker, the Thai cueist is now edging closer to a comeback that few thought possible during the darkest period of his career.

Thirapongpaiboon made history in 2010 when he became the youngest player ever to compile an official maximum 147 break in professional competition. The achievement instantly placed him among the sport’s most exciting prospects and earned him recognition across the snooker world. At the time, many believed he was destined to become Thailand’s next major star following in the footsteps of legends from the country’s rich snooker tradition.

However, his career dramatically stalled after he became embroiled in a match-fixing investigation. In 2015, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association handed him a lengthy suspension after finding him guilty of involvement in betting-related corruption offences. The ban effectively removed him from the professional scene during what should have been the peak developmental years of his career.

Since then, Thirapongpaiboon has largely stayed out of the international spotlight, though reports from Asian snooker circles suggest he has continued practising and competing in smaller regional events. Those close to the Thai player say he has remained determined to rebuild both his reputation and his game despite the stigma attached to his suspension.

Now, with his ban long behind him, there are increasing signs that the former prodigy is preparing for a serious attempt to return to the professional tour. Recent performances in amateur and qualifying competitions have hinted that the natural talent which once made him a record-breaker has not disappeared. Several observers have noted improvements in both his consistency and composure at the table.

A successful return would represent one of the more unusual comeback stories in modern snooker. The sport has taken a far tougher stance on integrity issues in recent years, particularly following a number of high-profile corruption investigations involving professional players. Because of this, any returning player linked to past scandals faces enormous scrutiny from fans, officials, and fellow competitors.

Still, there remains curiosity about whether Thirapongpaiboon can rediscover the level that once made him one of the game’s most talked-about teenagers. His attacking style, fearless potting, and break-building ability were widely admired during his early rise through the rankings. Even now, many fans still remember the excitement surrounding his historic 147 and the expectations that followed.

Thailand continues to produce talented snooker players, and a comeback from Thirapongpaiboon would add another intriguing chapter to the nation’s growing influence in the sport. While the road back to the professional circuit will not be easy, his recent progress suggests the possibility is becoming increasingly realistic.

Whether he can fully restore his standing in snooker remains uncertain, but the mere prospect of seeing the former record-breaker back competing at a high level is already generating attention throughout the game.
