The Olympic champion posted an emotional message on social media while continuing her recovery from a serious crash that occurred one month earlier in Olympia delle Tofane in Cortina d’Ampezzo. On February 8, Vonn had returned to the slopes aiming to chase a fourth Olympic medal, but her comeback lasted only 13 seconds before she clipped a gate, lost control, and slammed into the safety barrier. The accident resulted in multiple fractures in her right leg.
Following the crash, the 41-year-old underwent four surgeries in Italy and another in the United States. As she begins the long process of rehabilitation, Vonn used the occasion of International Women’s Day to reflect on the powerful influence of her mother.
In her Instagram Stories, Vonn shared a photo of Lindy cheering for her from the side of a race course, writing, “My forever inspiration. Love you, Mom.” She also posted another image showing the two together in a hospital room, describing her mother as “the most positive woman I have ever known,” and adding that if her mother could stay positive through hardship, she could do the same.
Lindy passed away in 2021 after battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Earlier in her life, she had also suffered a stroke while giving birth to Lindsey, which left her with a slight limp. Despite those challenges, she remained determined and optimistic, becoming a lasting source of motivation for her daughter.
Vonn has often credited her mother’s perseverance for shaping her own mentality as an athlete. According to the skiing legend, it was Lindy’s example of courage and character that helped her overcome the many injuries and setbacks she faced throughout her career.
Through her heartfelt tribute, Vonn not only honored her mother’s memory but also celebrated the strength of the women who have influenced her life.
