Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds has revealed that his outspoken support for LGBTQ youth led to death threats serious enough for him to involve the FBI.
Reynolds, who has publicly supported LGBTQ rights for years, made the disclosure during an interview with Attitude magazine. He said he had experienced several disturbing incidents because of his position as an LGBTQ ally, including what he described as “weird death threats.”
The singer explained that some people were unhappy with his activism and that the situation eventually became serious enough for authorities to become involved.
“I’ve had weird things happen, I’ve had weird death threats. I’ve gotten the FBI involved,” Reynolds said, according to Attitude.
Despite the threats, Reynolds said he did not see himself as a martyr. Instead, he used the experience to highlight what he described as the continuing challenges faced by LGBTQ people and young people.
“I’m not a martyr, but that is a reality,” he said, adding that he wanted people to understand that hostility toward LGBTQ people remained a serious issue.
His work supporting LGBTQ youth
Reynolds has been particularly vocal about supporting LGBTQ young people. He co-founded LOVELOUD, an organisation and festival focused on supporting LGBTQ youth and encouraging conversations about acceptance.
His involvement developed partly from his experiences growing up in a Mormon family and seeing friends struggle with their sexuality and religion. Over the years, he became increasingly outspoken about creating safer and more supportive environments for LGBTQ youth.
His activism has not always been universally welcomed. Reynolds previously acknowledged receiving criticism from people who disagreed with his views, while also saying that his goal was to encourage dialogue rather than portray himself as a hero or martyr.
Reynolds encourages people to become allies
During the Attitude interview, Reynolds also encouraged people who want to support the LGBTQ community to make an effort to learn and listen.
He pointed specifically to the importance of supporting young people who may be struggling with their identity or have not yet come out to their families. His comments reflected his broader belief that allies can play an important role by offering support and understanding.
For Reynolds, the issue has also been personal. He has spoken publicly about having LGBTQ friends and relatives and about how those relationships influenced his decision to become more involved in advocacy.
The death threats added another difficult dimension to that public role. While Reynolds did not present himself as a victim or hero, his account showed that his activism had brought serious hostility alongside the support he received.
Years after first becoming involved in LGBTQ advocacy, Reynolds has continued to use his public platform to discuss acceptance, mental health and the experiences of LGBTQ youth. His work with LOVELOUD remains one of the most visible parts of that effort.
For the Imagine Dragons singer, the controversy and threats have not changed the central message behind his advocacy: encouraging people to listen, support vulnerable young people and have difficult conversations rather than simply avoiding them.
