CBS Sports Analyst Reveals the Biggest Question Facing Duke Basketball Entering the 2026–27 Season

Expectations are once again sky-high for Duke as the Blue Devils prepare for the 2026–27 college basketball season. Under head coach Jon Scheyer, the program has established itself as one of the nation’s premier contenders, and another talented roster has fans believing a national championship run is possible. But despite the excitement surrounding the team, one respected CBS Sports college basketball analyst believes there is one major question that will determine how far Duke can go this season.

According to CBS Sports analyst Gary Parrish, Duke’s biggest challenge is figuring out whether its new-look roster can develop the chemistry and consistency needed to meet championship expectations. Talent has never been the issue in Durham, but blending experienced transfers with elite freshmen into a cohesive unit remains the key storyline entering the season.

Scheyer has continued to recruit at an elite level while also taking advantage of the NCAA transfer portal. The result is a roster loaded with athleticism, depth, and versatility. However, having talented players is only part of the equation. Duke must quickly establish defined roles, leadership, and offensive rhythm if it hopes to dominate the ACC and make another deep NCAA Tournament run.

The Blue Devils also enter the season with lofty expectations because of their recent success. After another strong campaign in 2025–26, Duke proved it remains among college basketball’s elite programs. That success, however, also brings increased pressure, as every opponent will treat a matchup with Duke as one of the biggest games on its schedule.

Another area to watch is Duke’s evolving style of play. Assistant coach Chris Carrawell recently explained that the coaching staff has become more flexible in tailoring the offense around its personnel. Instead of forcing players into one system, the Blue Devils adjust their approach based on the strengths of their roster, whether that means emphasizing perimeter shooting, defensive versatility, or inside scoring.

Depth could ultimately become Duke’s greatest strength. Several analysts believe the Blue Devils possess one of the deepest collections of guards and wings in the country, giving Scheyer numerous lineup combinations. The challenge will be balancing playing time while ensuring every player understands and embraces his role.

If Duke answers those questions early, the Blue Devils will once again be among the favorites to compete for both the ACC title and the national championship. Their talent level is undeniable, but as CBS Sports points out, the biggest test is whether that talent can consistently perform as one united team throughout the long college basketball season.

With another highly anticipated campaign about to begin, all eyes will be on Durham to see whether Jon Scheyer’s latest squad can transform enormous potential into championship success.
