Racing for Mercedes before his later move to Ferrari, Hamilton secured a record-breaking ninth victory at Silverstone, an achievement that left him visibly emotional after crossing the finish line.
Starting from pole, teammate George Russell initially controlled the race, but changing weather conditions transformed the event into a strategic contest. Rain forced teams to switch to intermediate tyres, creating a battle among the Mercedes pair and the McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The decisive moment came when Hamilton switched to slick tyres a lap earlier than Norris. Combined with a slower stop for the McLaren driver, the strategy handed Hamilton the lead, which he maintained to the chequered flag. Russell’s race ended prematurely due to a water-system failure, while Max Verstappen surged through the field late on to overtake Norris and finish second.
The victory marked the 104th win of Hamilton’s Formula One career and made him the first driver to claim a Grand Prix victory after surpassing 300 race starts, doing so at his 344th start. It also gave him sole ownership of the record for most wins at a single Formula One event, surpassing the eight victories achieved by Michael Schumacher at the French Grand Prix.
Reflecting on the achievement, Hamilton admitted he had questioned whether he would ever return to the top step of the podium after his previous victory at the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
