Snooker icon Jimmy White has once again shown why he remains one of the sport’s most beloved figures after beginning his 47th consecutive professional season with a victory and a century break.
The 64-year-old, affectionately known as “The Whirlwind,” rolled back the years during the China Open qualifiers in Leicester, defeating Sean O’Sullivan 6-2 in an impressive display that highlighted both his experience and enduring passion for the game.
White, who first turned professional in 1980, is continuing a career that now spans nearly five decades. While many of his contemporaries have long since retired from competitive play, White remains determined to test himself against the next generation of players on the professional circuit.
The highlight of his victory came in the seventh frame when he compiled a superb break of 112, reminding fans that his trademark attacking style is still very much alive. He then sealed the match with a break of 59 in the final frame to complete a convincing win.
The result was particularly significant as it marked White’s first victory since January, when he won a match at the Welsh Open qualifiers. It also extended his extraordinary record of winning professional matches across 47 consecutive seasons.
Despite the challenges that come with competing at the highest level in his mid-sixties, White insists his enthusiasm for snooker remains as strong as ever.
“I’m delighted with the win and I played well. We go again tomorrow,” White said after the match.
“I still love the game and I have been working hard on the practice table.”
White’s commitment to the sport has earned widespread admiration. A six-time World Championship runner-up and winner of ten ranking titles, he remains one of the most popular figures in snooker history. His achievements include victory in the 1992 UK Championship and two Masters titles, while his entertaining style helped attract countless fans to the sport during the 1980s and 1990s.
Thanks to an invitational tour card awarded in recognition of his contribution to snooker, White continues to compete on the World Snooker Tour and shows no signs of stepping away from the table anytime soon.
His latest victory sets up another qualifier against Louis Heathcote, with White needing several more wins to reach the final stages of the China Open in Taiyuan later this year.
For a player entering his 47th consecutive professional season, simply competing would already be an achievement. Producing a century break and opening with a win makes it even more remarkable. And if White’s own words are anything to go by, the love affair between “The Whirlwind” and snooker is far from over.
