Sarina Wiegman is set to make tactical adjustments to England’s lineup for Tuesday’s final World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, as the Lionesses attempt to recover from their heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain.
The loss to the world champions has left England’s hopes of automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil hanging in the balance. The European champions must not only defeat Ukraine at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium but also achieve a better result than Spain, who face Iceland, if they are to finish top of Group A3.
Reflecting on the setback, Wiegman admitted the defeat felt like “a hit on the chin” but praised the squad’s response. She said the team had rallied together after the disappointment, emphasizing that unity is tested most when results go against you. According to the England manager, the players have trained well and maintained a positive atmosphere heading into the decisive match.
With Spain strongly expected to overcome Iceland, England appear likely to face the play-offs rather than secure direct qualification. However, Wiegman stressed that any changes she makes to her starting XI will be based on tactical considerations rather than simply rotating players for the final game of the season.
The Dutch coach confirmed she intends to make some alterations, noting that several players have impressed and are pushing for opportunities. She expects Ukraine to present a different challenge from Spain and wants to see how other members of the squad perform.
Facing a Ukrainian side that has lost all five of its group matches, Wiegman highlighted the importance of scoring early. She said England’s focus is on controlling their own performance, dominating possession, creating chances, finding the net, and keeping a clean sheet. An early goal, she added, would help the team build momentum while they await updates from the match in Reykjavik.
Wiegman also revealed there are no fresh injury concerns within the squad. Although England will receive live updates on events in Iceland, she insisted the information will not be passed on to the players during the game, as their priority remains securing victory against Ukraine.
