‘Utterly devastating’ – Shaun Murphy admits he may NEVER get over heartbreaking World Snooker Championship final defeat

SHAUN MURPHY has opened up on his World Snooker Championship final defeat against Wu Yize – admitting he’s unsure that he’ll get over the heartbreaking loss at the Crucible.

Shaun Murphy has admitted that his painful World Snooker Championship final defeat to Wu Yize may remain with him forever, describing the loss as “utterly devastating” after falling short on snooker’s biggest stage at the Crucible Theatre.

Murphy, one of the sport’s most experienced and respected figures, arrived at the final in strong form and looked determined to capture another world title. Throughout the tournament, the former world champion produced some of his best snooker in recent years, defeating several top opponents with his trademark long potting and tactical brilliance. Many fans believed the 2005 champion was ready to enjoy another historic moment in Sheffield.

However, the final against Wu Yize turned into one of the most emotional matches of Murphy’s career. The Chinese star displayed remarkable composure and fearless attacking play under pressure, eventually denying Murphy in a dramatic finish that left the Englishman visibly crushed at the end of the contest.

Speaking after the defeat, Murphy did not hide the emotional toll the loss had taken on him.

“It’s utterly devastating,” he admitted. “You work your whole life for moments like this, and when it slips away it’s difficult to put into words. I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever fully get over it.”

The defeat appeared especially painful because Murphy had fought back strongly during the latter stages of the final and looked capable of completing a memorable comeback. At several points inside the Crucible, momentum seemed to swing in his favour as the crowd rallied behind the popular Englishman. Yet Wu remained calm in the deciding moments and held his nerve to secure the biggest victory of his career.

Murphy praised his opponent afterwards, acknowledging the quality and maturity shown by the young Chinese star.

“Wu was incredible,” Murphy said. “He handled the pressure brilliantly. He deserves all the credit because he played fantastic snooker when it mattered most.”

Despite the heartbreak, many within the sport have praised Murphy for the way he conducted himself throughout the championship. The 42-year-old has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent seasons, regularly competing at the latter stages of major tournaments and reminding fans why he remains one of snooker’s elite competitors.

Murphy’s honesty after the final also resonated with supporters, many of whom took to social media to express sympathy for the emotional defeat. Several former professionals noted how painful Crucible losses can become, especially for players who understand how rare opportunities in world finals truly are.

For Wu Yize, meanwhile, the victory could mark the beginning of a new era. China continues to produce world-class snooker talent, and his triumph over a player of Murphy’s experience further highlights the growing strength of the sport in Asia.

As for Murphy, questions will inevitably arise over whether he can recover mentally from such a crushing setback. While he insisted he still loves the game and remains motivated to compete, the emotional scars of the Crucible final may take considerable time to heal.

Even so, Murphy’s fighting spirit and passion for snooker suggest he is unlikely to walk away quietly. Though this defeat may haunt him, it could also fuel another determined comeback from one of the sport’s most enduring competitors.
