Shaun Murphy shares his view on a World Snooker Championship opponent’s conduct after an over-the-top celebration following victory against a teenage player.

Shaun Murphy has defended Kyren Wilson after the latter faced criticism for his exuberant reaction following a comeback win over teenage prospect Stan Moody at the World Snooker Championship.

Wilson, 34, overturned a 6–2 deficit by winning seven consecutive frames to seal a 10–7 victory and advance to the second round. His animated celebration afterward drew mixed reactions, with some labeling it excessive.

Murphy, however, dismissed the backlash, arguing that such reactions are natural in high-pressure moments. He emphasized that emotions can take over after a dramatic turnaround and insisted there was no ill intent behind Wilson’s actions. Having known him since his early days, Murphy maintained that the celebration should not be misinterpreted.

Wilson, who has spoken about being inspired by a young transplant patient, will now face Mark Allen in the next round. After the match, he also praised Moody, noting the teenager’s growing influence and popularity among younger players.

Meanwhile, Murphy’s own campaign has not been without incident. During his opening-round win over Fan Zhengyi, he responded sharply to a spectator’s criticism and was frustrated by a malfunctioning table light mid-shot. Despite the distractions, he progressed and is set to take on Xiao Guodong for a place in the quarter-finals.

Murphy remains focused on his performance at the Crucible, putting aside off-table matters as he pursues a second world title.
