MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia University has officially named its 71st Mountaineer Mascot for the 2025-26 season.
According to WVU Today, Cade Kincaid, a junior accounting major from Fayetteville, was selected to don the iconic buckskins and coonskin cap. The announcement was made Saturday evening during the men’s basketball game.
Kincaid, whose mother and sister are both WVU alumni, expressed pride in continuing his family’s legacy at the university. One of his most cherished memories was attending the 2023 Backyard Brawl at Milan Puskar Stadium with his father, an alumnus, as the “Student of the Game.” Reflecting on the experience, he said, “Watching the Mountaineers beat Pitt that day with my dad was incredible.”
Overjoyed by his selection, Kincaid shared how meaningful the role is to him. “From age 4 to 20, I was just a Mountaineer fan. But in the last two years, I realized that if I pursued this role, I could truly make a difference and positively impact people and our state.”
Kincaid will officially take on the role from current mascot Braden Adkins at the “Passing of the Rifle” ceremony, scheduled for April 4 at 6 p.m. in the Mountainlair. The alternate mascot will be announced at a later date.
