West Virginia Athletic Director Wren Baker once again finds himself in a familiar position searching for a new head coach.
Over the past two and a half years, Baker has hired head coaches for football, women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball, along with conducting two men’s basketball coaching searches. Now, following Darian DeVries’ departure after just one season, he’s preparing for his third men’s basketball search this spring.
Naturally, the first name that comes to mind for many whether realistic or not is Bob Huggins. The Hall of Fame coach’s departure wasn’t the storybook ending he or Mountaineer fans had envisioned, and a vocal portion of the fan base has been calling for his return since last year.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Baker was asked whether Huggins would be considered for the vacancy. As expected, he avoided giving a direct answer.
“I’m not going to talk about candidates,” Baker said. “I think I answered that last year by saying I appreciate our tradition, especially his contributions to it. But really, I’m focused on the future, and that’s probably the same way I would answer it today. Other than that, I don’t have much to offer in terms of specific candidates.”
Huggins, now 71, has expressed interest in returning to coaching since his resignation. However, if he does step back onto the sidelines, it will likely be with another program.
