Wout van Aert delivered yet another standout performance during the closing weekend of a Grand Tour. Representing Visma | Lease a Bike, the Belgian rider played a pivotal role in Simon Yates securing the overall victory on Saturday and set up Olav Kooij perfectly for the final sprint in Rome.
Nathan Van Hooydonck, also present in Rome with the Dutch team, spoke to Het Nieuwsblad about what he believes is the key to their success. “We aim to track everything measurable,” he said. “Our nutritionist, especially in 2022 and 2023, made a real difference. Over three weeks, eating and hydrating properly without missing a beat can truly set you apart.”
Van Hooydonck emphasized the team’s unity: “‘Winning Together’ is more than a catchphrase,” he explained. “Everyone, including the staff, joins the podium celebration when we win. The chef has to perform for three weeks, the masseur too. That’s where our power lies it’s our DNA. And Wout sets the tone. When your leader sacrifices for the team, the rest follow suit.”
Reflecting on this Giro’s significance, Van Hooydonck noted its impact beyond the race itself. “This is our first overall win since Merijn Zeeman left. It proves our spirit remains intact. This result is also a huge boost for the Tour. Jonas Vingegaard must have been thrilled to see Yates climbing so strongly.”
Bakelants: “It Gets Easier from Here”
Simon Yates appreciated Van Aert’s contributions during the Giro, something Jan Bakelants, his friend and cycling pundit, highlighted in the Wuyts & Vlaeminck podcast. Bakelants noted that Van Aert’s base form had been compromised by illness earlier in the season, but added, “Despite that, he’s come out of the Giro looking very sharp. Hopefully, he can continue building on that.”
Bakelants believes the hardest part is over for Van Aert: “He’s likely feeling back on track now. From here, it’s about recovery first, then a solid training camp. Having his wife and children nearby will ease the mental load it will all fall into place more naturally.”
Gilbert’s Subtle Dig
Former pro Philippe Gilbert also applauded Van Aert’s performance, calling him “the best rider in this Giro.” However, he added a pointed remark: “I’d like to see one of his teammates show him the same dedication someday. If that ever happens, he’ll be unstoppable.”
