Lindsey Vonn was the top-performing American in Friday’s FIS World Cup super-G in La Thuile, Italy. The 40-year-old raced down the 3 Franco Berthod slope in 58.65 seconds, securing 13th place. Italy’s Federica Brignone claimed victory, narrowly edging out compatriot Sofia Goggia by just 0.01 seconds.
Reflecting on her performance, Vonn told U.S. Ski and Snowboard media liaison Sierra Ryder, “Today was definitely better than yesterday, but I wish I could have been a little faster. I was just on the wrong side of the tenths.”
Vonn came into the race after a speed weekend in Kvitfjell, Norway, where she finished 13th, 16th, and 16th in two downhill events and a super-G. However, she recorded a DNF in Thursday’s race in Italy. On Friday, warm conditions created a slower, more challenging course for later competitors. Racing early with bib No. 4, Vonn capitalized on her start, improving from the 34th-fastest opening split to posting the sixth-fastest time in the final sector. “For me, it was important to finish today,” she said. “It’s been an up-and-down season, so this was a solid run that boosts my confidence for the Finals.”
Other American skiers included Lauren Macuga and Jackie Wiles, who finished 19th and 30th, respectively, while Breezy Johnson, Tricia Mangan, Keely Cashman, and Allison Mollin placed outside the points in 32nd, 34th, 37th, and 44th.
Brignone, at 34, continues to defy age expectations, securing her 14th podium of the season—a career best. She now leads the overall, downhill, and super-G standings and sits second in the GS rankings by 20 points. With a chance to become only the fifth skier to win four globes in one season, Brignone looks ahead to the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley. “There’s still one race to go, and I know Lara (Gut-Behrami) won’t let me have it easily,” she told FIS. “It’s going to be a fight, so I need to stay focused and see if I have enough energy left for the finals.”
Three Athletes Named to Freestyle World Championships
Three freestyle skiers with ties to Eagle County have been selected for the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships in St. Moritz and Engadin, Switzerland, from March 18-30.
Mogul skiers Dylan Walczyk and Tess Johnson earned spots on the eight-member U.S. moguls team, while Chris Del Bosco will compete in ski cross. This marks Walczyk’s sixth world championship, Johnson’s third, and Del Bosco’s ninth having competed in every world championship since 2009.
Johnson is coming off her strongest season yet, with three podium finishes and her first win in seven years, securing third place overall in the moguls standings. She previously won bronze in dual moguls at the 2019 Deer Valley Worlds and finished fifth and 11th in dual and individual moguls at the 2021 championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Walczyk wrapped up his 2024-25 season with two top-10 finishes, including fourth place in dual moguls at the final World Cup event in Livigno on March 11-12. His best world championship result to date is eighth, also at Deer Valley.
Del Bosco, currently ranked 26th in the Cup standings, had a season-best sixth-place finish in Gudauri on Feb. 28. The 42-year-old won gold for Canada at the 2011 world championships.
The men’s and women’s moguls qualifications take place on March 18, with finals following on March 19 at 4:30 a.m. MST, streamed on skiandsnowboard.live. The dual moguls competition is set for March 21 at 7:30 a.m. MST, while ski cross finals will be held on March 22 at 4 a.m. MST. The team ski cross finals wrap up the event on March 23 at 4:30 a.m. MST.
