The Dallas Wings may be struggling in the standings, but rookie standout Paige Bueckers has continued to turn heads with her well-rounded play. The No. 1 overall pick has met the high expectations placed on her, drawing comparisons to Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark after Clark’s own stellar rookie year. The two 23-year-old guards have faced off since their college days, and some even argue Bueckers is the better player.
One person who has had a close look at both is Wings guard Grace Berger, a former Fever teammate of Clark. Drafted seventh overall in 2023, Berger played with Clark last season before being waived in February. After a brief stint with the Los Angeles Sparks, she joined the Wings on a series of seven-day hardship deals, eventually signing for the rest of the season on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old praised Bueckers’ talent and emphasized the importance of getting her more involved offensively. “We need her to handle the ball a lot and make decisions, especially in transition,” Berger told the Indianapolis Star. “When she has the ball, everyone’s on alert, which opens up opportunities for others. It’s about putting her where she can succeed.”
Berger also said she feels increasingly comfortable in Dallas, calling the Wings “an easy group to fit in with” and noting areas where she can improve—like pushing the pace and getting the ball to key scorers such as Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale.
For Berger, it appears Dallas may be the fresh start she was looking for.
