The West Virginia University (WVU) community and Mountaineer football faithful across the nation are celebrating a momentous announcement: the athletic program has officially unveiled plans to erect a statue honoring legendary head coach Don Nehlen. This tribute not only commemorates Nehlen’s monumental impact on WVU football but also highlights his lasting legacy in college athletics and the state of West Virginia.

Coach Nehlen, who served as the head football coach at WVU from 1980 to 2000, is widely regarded as one of the most transformative figures in the program’s history. Taking over a struggling team, Nehlen instilled a culture of discipline, hard work, and pride that led to unprecedented success on the field. Under his leadership, the Mountaineers compiled a remarkable 149–93–4 record, earning 13 bowl game appearances and achieving two undefeated regular seasons. His teams frequently ranked among the nation’s best, with the 1988 and 1993 squads standing out as particularly iconic.
