The Mountaineers have already suffered major losses in the transfer portal following Darian DeVries’ move to Indiana, with key players Jonathan Powell, Tucker DeVries, and freshman KJ Tenner all set to leave. Now, another starter is on his way out. On3 Sports reported Tuesday that WVU forward Amani Hansberry has entered the transfer portal. After transferring from Illinois, Hansberry averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in his lone season at Morgantown. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Hansberry expressed gratitude to Mountaineer fans on social media for their “unwavering support” while announcing his decision to “explore new opportunities.” His departure leaves Sencire Harris, Ofri Naveh, and Haris Elezovic as the only potential returners with playing experience in WVU’s colors, making a near-complete roster rebuild likely similar to what DeVries undertook last offseason. With WVU’s entire 2025 recruiting class decommitting, the next head coach will have a major challenge ahead.
Hansberry’s exit could also indicate that Associate Head Coach Chester Frazier is no longer in the running for the head coaching job. Having followed Frazier from Illinois to WVU, Hansberry likely would have stayed if he believed Frazier was set to take over. This could also cast doubt on the future of Harris, another player who followed Frazier to Morgantown.
