The West Virginia Mountaineers football team has made a late addition to its 2025 recruiting class with the commitment of Kaleb Gray, a 6’2″, 180-pound safety from Dodge City Community College in Kansas.
Gray, originally from Texas, received his offer from West Virginia on April 29 and chose the Mountaineers over multiple other programs, including South Alabama, Ball State, UTEP, Florida International, New Mexico, Utah State, and others. During his redshirt freshman season at Dodge City, he tallied 32 tackles and forced three fumbles.
He becomes the first junior college defensive back to join West Virginia’s 2025 class and brings with him three years of eligibility. His signing is part of West Virginia’s broader effort to retool its roster during the offseason.
Scouting Report:
Gray boasts impressive physical attributes for a defensive back and has shown strong skills in both coverage and run defense. He plays with intensity, demonstrates good tackling ability, and has a knack for creating turnovers. His versatility has been on display at Dodge City, where he played both safety and cornerback, and he has shown the ability to stay with receivers and make plays on the ball.
Though adjusting to Power Five football will be a challenge, Gray offers significant potential at a critical position.
Program Fit:
With the Mountaineers needing help in the secondary, Gray arrives as a timely and promising addition. His three remaining years of eligibility provide flexibility, he could make an immediate impact or develop further over time. While West Virginia hasn’t heavily relied on junior college talent in recent roster rebuilds, Gray appears to be a strong fit, particularly in the defensive backfield. He is expected to compete for a spot at safety, but his skill set also gives the coaching staff options to move him around.
Recruiting Outlook:
As West Virginia continues its roster overhaul, adding experienced and physically capable players like Gray helps address depth issues in the secondary. The Mountaineers are actively utilizing both the transfer portal and junior college ranks to strengthen their team. While Gray is a key piece, the effort to enhance the defensive backfield is ongoing.
