Ben McCollum’s remarkable season with the Drake Bulldogs ended on Saturday after a loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the NCAA Tournament’s second round.
Now, with several programs searching for a new coach, McCollum is expected to receive plenty of interest as schools attempt to lure him away from Drake and offer him his first Power Four opportunity. West Virginia, Iowa, and Villanova have all been mentioned as potential landing spots for the 43-year-old, and Minnesota could also join the mix. Among these, West Virginia and Iowa are seen as frontrunners. McCollum hails from Iowa City, the home of the University of Iowa, while a move to West Virginia would reunite him with Wren Baker, who was the athletic director at Northwest Missouri State during McCollum’s early coaching years.
Although the chances are slim, McCollum might choose to remain at Drake, betting on himself and waiting for a more appealing opportunity in the future. However, with West Virginia and Iowa expected to make strong pushes soon, it could be tough for him to decline an offer if one comes his way.
