West Virginia head coach Ross Hodge has had a whirlwind start to his new role.

After two successful seasons leading North Texas, Hodge was brought on at West Virginia, partly due to his prior relationship with athletic director Wren Baker, who had also worked at North Texas before moving to Morgantown. “The whole thing moved really fast,” Hodge shared on the Jon Rothstein podcast. “From the first contact to the official announcement, it probably all happened within a week.”

Following his final duties with North Texas in the NIT, Hodge jumped right into his new responsibilities building a coaching staff and assembling a roster in Morgantown.

“It’s been great getting settled in Morgantown,” he added. As a first-time head coach at this level, Hodge has embraced both the city and the high-profile nature of his new job something that stands in stark contrast to his quieter life in Denton, Texas, near the bustling Dallas sports scene.

“There are no pro teams here, so you go from a pretty anonymous life to being more in the public eye,” he noted.

Aside from those lifestyle changes, the core of his work recruiting remains familiar. “You’re still diving into the portal, trying to build a roster you feel confident can compete,” Hodge said. “That part hasn’t really changed.”
