Jeremiah Azu is aiming to break the British 100m record this summer following an impressive indoor season.
The Welsh sprinter clinched the world indoor 60m title in China last Friday, just two weeks after securing gold at the European Indoors in the Netherlands, running a personal best of 6.49 seconds in both finals. Now, Azu sees his 60m triumph as a stepping stone to surpassing his 100m personal best, with Zharnel Hughes’ British record of 9.83 seconds in his sights.
“I believe I can run 9.8,” said the 23-year-old, who dipped under 10 seconds for the first and only time in Germany last May, clocking 9.97 seconds.
“I’ve always known I had the ability, and running 6.49 just confirms that for me. I wouldn’t need to do anything drastic to go 9.8 with that time. Zharnel holds the British record, but it’s exciting to be in that mix and part of the conversation.”
Azu’s only major individual 100m medal came at the 2022 European Championships, where he won bronze. He made the British team for the Paris Olympics but was disqualified from his 100m heat due to a false start.
Looking ahead, Azu is confident about his chances at the World Championships in Tokyo this September.
“That’s always the goal,” he said. “It would be amazing to step onto the podium why not? You have to perform when it matters, and I believe I have that ability. I’m confident in my 100m and how this season will unfold.”
