WELCOME TO WEST VIRGINIA!: Houston Transfer Gigi Cooke Commits to West Virginia….

Morgantown, WV – The West Virginia women’s basketball program just got stronger. Former University of Houston standout Gigi Cooke has officially announced her commitment to West Virginia University (WVU) via the transfer portal, bringing experience, energy, and elite guard play to the Mountaineers.

Cooke, a 5-foot-9 guard known for her court vision, scoring ability, and relentless defense, made the announcement on social media Monday evening, sharing a photo of herself in Mountaineers gear with the caption: “Next Chapter. Let’s work. #HailWV”. Her commitment marks a significant offseason addition for head coach Mark Kellogg, who enters his second year at the helm of the WVU program.

Cooke averaged 10.4 points, 3.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game last season at Houston, where she played a key role in the Cougars’ backcourt. Known for her explosive first step and clutch shot-making, she quickly became a fan favorite and a leader on and off the court.

Her decision to transfer comes amidst a busy and competitive offseason for NCAA women’s basketball, as players explore new opportunities in an evolving college sports landscape shaped by NIL deals and increased transfer activity.

“I’m grateful for my time at Houston—it shaped me into the player and person I am today,” Cooke said in a statement. “But I’m ready for a new challenge. WVU felt like home from the moment I stepped on campus. The culture, the fans, and the vision Coach Kellogg has—it’s something I want to be a part of.”

West Virginia finished the 2024 season with a strong showing, making a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. With several key pieces returning and the addition of Cooke, expectations are rising for the Mountaineers heading into the 2025 campaign.

Coach Kellogg expressed his excitement about Cooke’s commitment: “Gigi is the kind of player who impacts the game in multiple ways. She’s got a high basketball IQ, plays with heart, and brings experience in big moments. We’re thrilled to welcome her to Morgantown.”

Cooke is expected to bring immediate depth and versatility to WVU’s backcourt, potentially sliding into a starting role depending on team dynamics this fall. Her leadership and toughness could be especially valuable in Big 12 play, where physicality and pace are defining factors.

Born and raised in Texas, Cooke started her college career at a junior college before transferring to Houston, where she developed into one of the American Athletic Conference’s most dynamic guards. Her journey is a testament to persistence and growth, qualities that should serve her well in Morgantown.

With the Mountaineers continuing to build momentum both on the court and on the recruiting trail, Cooke’s arrival is a sign that West Virginia is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for top-tier transfers looking to compete at the highest level.

Mountaineer Nation, get ready—Gigi Cooke is coming to town.
