Many football players pursue their dreams of playing professionally outside of the NFL, and former WVU wide receiver Mario Alford is a perfect example. Now a standout in the Canadian Football League (CFL), Alford recently put his elite speed on display with a spectacular 99-yard kickoff return touchdown for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a 39-32 victory over the Toronto Argonauts.
The highlight-worthy return broke open a tie game, as Alford outran the kick coverage and took it all the way to the end zone. It was a clear reminder: you can’t teach speed and Alford has it in abundance.
Alford played two seasons at West Virginia (2013–2014), where he established himself as a deep threat and explosive playmaker. Over his collegiate career, he recorded 92 receptions for 1,497 yards and 13 touchdowns. In his senior season alone, he totaled 64 catches, 945 receiving yards, and 11 touchdown receptions across 13 games. His playmaking ability didn’t stop at wide receiver he also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and averaged an impressive 28.6 yards per return.
Since making the move to the CFL, Alford has continued to impress with his special teams prowess. In his seven-year CFL career, he has scored seven punt return touchdowns and four kickoff return touchdowns, becoming one of the league’s most feared return specialists.
For WVU fans, Alford remains a familiar name and an unforgettable talent. His explosive speed continues to shine north of the border, giving Mountaineer supporters a reason to tune in to CFL games. Whether it’s catching passes or burning defenders on kick returns, Alford still knows how to take it to the house.
