Wales rugby reveals Steve Tandy as new head coach

Wales have named Steve Tandy as their new head coach. The 45 year old, originally from Wales, will officially take over on September 1, succeeding Warren Gatland on a permanent basis. Tandy joins after nearly six years as Scotland’s defence coach.

He now faces the challenge of revitalising Welsh rugby, following a dismal period that saw the team lose 18 consecutive matches before finally breaking the streak with a 31-22 win over Japan in Kobe on July 12.

Tandy’s first game at the helm will be against Argentina in Cardiff on Sunday, November 9. This match will be followed by fixtures against Japan, New Zealand, and reigning world champions South Africa over the next three weekends.

“Coaching my national team is a huge honour and privilege,” said Tandy, who is set to lead Wales into the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. “I’m committed to helping rebuild Welsh rugby and guiding the team back to competing with the top nations.

“I’m truly excited about the future of Welsh rugby and believe in the talent and work ethic of our young players.”

Gatland’s second term as Wales coach ended in February after a 22-15 loss to Italy during the Six Nations. Interim head coach Matt Sherratt then stepped in and led the team through defeats to Ireland, Scotland, and England, as well as a summer tour of Japan, which started with a 24-19 loss in Kitakyushu on July 5.

Tandy, who hails from Tonmawr, previously coached the Ospreys from 2012 to 2018, winning the PRO12 title in his debut season. He later served as defence coach for Australia’s Waratahs and was also on Warren Gatland’s coaching staff for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 2021.

Abi Tierney, chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union, said: “After an extensive and detailed recruitment process, Steve stood out as the best candidate. We are confident we’ve appointed the ideal coach to lead the team forward.

“This is a crucial hire for us and aligns with our five-year plan for long-term success in men’s rugby. As a proud Welshman, Steve can connect with our young talent and bring energy to the entire rugby community.

“Our focus now is on ensuring he has everything he needs to thrive in this position.”
