NEWTON, Iowa — Kyle Busch had just clocked the second-fastest time in Group A during Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series practice at Iowa Speedway when disaster struck.
On his 18th lap, Busch aggressively entered Turn 1, but his No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet lost control and crashed nose-first into the outside wall. He explained he had been working to stabilize the rear of the car.
“Every time I pushed a bit harder, the rear would chatter,” Busch said. “I felt really confident after the adjustments we made came out of Turn 4 fast, went into Turn 1 with too much confidence, and the right rear gave out, leading to the crash.
“I’m struggling to know how to trust the car when it feels solid in one corner but not in the next.”
Busch, currently 81 points below the playoff cutoff, is in danger of missing the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs for a second consecutive year and likely needs a win in one of the next four races to stay in contention.
