Guided by senior star Paige Bueckers, the Huskies clinched their first NCAA championship in nearly ten years with a dominant 82–59 victory over South Carolina. As the WNBA Draft approaches, Bueckers is gearing up for the next chapter in her journey one that many believe will begin with her being selected first overall by the Dallas Wings.
Tributes are pouring in as fans and teammates reflect on Bueckers’ legacy at UConn. A viral video shows an emotional moment of her hugging teammates after being subbed out of the title game. Set to touching music, the clip deeply affected fellow guard KK Arnold, who shared it on social media with the caption, “Really didn’t need to see this,” and a frowning emoji highlighting the emotional difficulty of saying goodbye.
Arnold, who shared the backcourt with Bueckers for two seasons, is expected to step into a larger leadership role for the Huskies next year. But their bond extended well beyond basketball. Their connection both on and off the court was instrumental in carrying UConn through a season marked by challenges and injuries, culminating in their championship triumph.
As Bueckers prepares to make her mark in the WNBA, she’s also hinting at some personal changes, including her signature hairstyle.
“I think it’s time for a switch up,” she said when asked if she’d stick with her iconic double braids. “The braids, they had a good run.”
All eyes are now on Monday night’s WNBA Draft, airing live on ESPN from The Shed in New York City. With Bueckers poised to be the top pick and the newly formed Golden State Valkyries joining the league, women’s basketball is stepping into an exciting new era.
