The defending world champion crashed on lap four of nine after his front wheel locked through a corner, pitching him over the handlebars on the tough Citadel circuit. Briefly, Lars van der Haar, Thibau Nys and Michael Vanthourenhout took advantage and opened a gap as Van der Poel got back to his feet and rejoined the race.
Fortunately, he escaped without serious injury. Still in the rainbow jersey, Van der Poel contained the losses and rapidly clawed his way back into the front group. The crash and its immediate aftermath can be seen in the video below.
