Team Zambia’s 4x400m Relay Squad Trains in Jamaica under Sprint Legend Usain Bolt and Coach Glen Mills Ahead of  Upcoming World Athletics Relays…

In a bold and strategic move aimed at bolstering their chances on the international stage, Zambia’s national 4x400m relay squad has embarked on an intensive training camp in Kingston, Jamaica, under the guidance of renowned sprint coach Glen Mills and sprint icon Usain Bolt. The squad’s preparations are geared toward the upcoming World Athletics Relays set to take place in May, where qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics and world rankings are on the line.

This collaboration marks a historic moment for Zambian athletics, signaling a renewed commitment to high-performance training and global competitiveness. The team, composed of some of the country’s most promising quarter-milers, arrived in Jamaica earlier this month to begin a four-week intensive training program at the Racers Track Club – a facility that has produced numerous world-class athletes including Bolt himself, Yohan Blake, and Warren Weir.

Speaking from Kingston, head coach Glen Mills praised the Zambian athletes for their discipline and drive. “They’ve come here with a strong determination to learn and grow. Their talent is evident, and with the right conditioning, they can be serious contenders on the world stage,” said Mills, whose coaching expertise has helped athletes claim multiple Olympic and World Championship medals.

Adding star power to the training camp, Usain Bolt has taken an active mentorship role, offering the Zambian athletes insights into race strategy, mental preparation, and sprint mechanics. “It’s great to see African teams investing in relay depth,” Bolt said. “The 4x400m is a grueling event that demands teamwork, endurance, and heart. These Zambian boys have it in them. They just need refinement.”

The squad’s captain, Kennedy Luchembe, expressed excitement about the opportunity. “Training under legends like Bolt and Coach Mills is a dream for any athlete. We’re learning so much—from explosive starts to how to maintain speed on the back stretch. We’re also improving our baton handoffs, which are crucial in the relays.”

The Jamaican camp also features simulated race situations, high-intensity strength and conditioning sessions, and video analysis to identify technical areas for improvement. Nutrition, recovery protocols, and psychological training are also part of the holistic approach being employed to prepare the team for elite competition.

Team Zambia hopes to not only qualify for the Paris Olympics through the World Relays but also inspire a new era in Zambian track and field. The relay team’s performance in May will be closely watched by fans back home, many of whom view this training opportunity as a turning point for athletics in the country.

With less than a month to go until the World Athletics Relays, the Zambian squad remains focused and motivated. Backed by world-class training, mentorship, and a desire to make history, they are determined to make their mark when the starting gun sounds.
