“Tadej, Jonas, Remco — they’ll all be flying. But the Tour is the Tour” – Geraint Thomas readying himself for final Tour de France of his career.

Geraint Thomas, who famously claimed the Maillot Jaune in 2018, holds many cherished memories of the Tour de France. In 2026, however, the Welsh cyclist will line up for what he says will be the final Grand Tour of his career. At 39, Thomas is eager to leave a lasting impression.

“I’m excited to be back racing first in Switzerland, then heading into the Tour,” said the INEOS Grenadiers veteran on the latest episode of his Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast. He’s currently training at altitude as he prepares for his return at the Tour de Suisse. “This year’s Tour looks set to be a brutal one,” he remarked.

Thomas has remained competitive at the Grand Tour level, placing on the podium at the Giro d’Italia in both 2023 and 2024. Still, few anticipate that he’ll challenge for the top spots at the 2025 Tour de France, largely due to the stacked field. “Pogacar, Vingegaard, Evenepoel they’re all going to be flying,” he admitted. “But it’s the Tour, and I’m buzzing for it.”

While Thomas has shone at the Giro in recent seasons, in 2025 he was watching from the sidelines. “Watching some of those stages, I couldn’t help but think, ‘Man, I wish I was out there,’” he said with a smile. “I often feel that way watching races, but the Giro is something else. I’ve done it a few times lately, and it’s such a special race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t on the cards for me this year.”

Thomas also had reason to celebrate, as fellow Brit Simon Yates rose above the chaos to secure the Maglia Rosa. “I always felt he had podium potential he’s a real Grand Tour talent but I think moving to Visma has really elevated him,” Thomas observed. “He fits their system perfectly and is clearly benefiting from top-tier support.”

Reflecting on his INEOS Grenadiers teammates’ performances, Thomas offered a candid but optimistic assessment. “We went in hoping for more, no question, but there’s still a lot to be proud of especially Egan Bernal,” he noted. “He went down a few times but never gave in. He’s got serious grit, and the whole team showed great spirit.”
