“I Have Spent So Many Years Doing Marvel”: Elizabeth Olsen Says She Needs To Prove She Has Good Movie Taste Post-MCU..

Elizabeth Olsen has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2014, beginning with a cameo as Wanda Maximoff in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and later taking on a more prominent role in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Over the years, she has featured in several Marvel productions, including the hit Disney+ show WandaVision. Her most recent appearance in the MCU was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), but she has since confirmed that she won’t be returning for Avengers: Doomsday due to other commitments. While her live-action presence in Marvel has paused, her character continues in animated series like What If…? and the upcoming Marvel Zombies.

Outside of her Marvel work, Olsen has built an eclectic acting portfolio. She began acting as a child in the 1990s, with early roles in How the West Was Fun and Full House. Her breakthrough in independent film came in 2011 with projects like Kill Your Darlings and Red Lights. During her time with Marvel, she continued to explore other roles, appearing in films such as Godzilla (2014), as well as series like Sorry for Your Loss and Love & Death. Her most recent film, The Assessment, shows her continuing to pursue roles that reflect her artistic interests. She’s now focused on her upcoming project, a pilot episode for FX’s Seven Sisters.

In a candid interview on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, Olsen revealed that despite her successful career, she has felt pressure to validate her personal taste in films. She explained that when Iron Man first came out, she viewed it as strong storytelling with cultural and political themes. But as Marvel grew into a blockbuster powerhouse, public opinion toward superhero films shifted. While she’s proud of her work as Wanda, she admits that the genre doesn’t align with the type of art she typically consumes, which is why her non-Marvel roles are carefully chosen to reflect her own tastes and values.
