Dawn Staley’s new book Uncommon Favor hits bookstore shelves today, offering readers an inspiring look at the experiences that have influenced her life both on and off the basketball court.
Subtitled Basketball, North Philly, my mother, and the lessons I learned from all three, the book was first announced by Staley in February. The phrase “uncommon favor” gained special meaning after South Carolina’s perfect run to the 2024 national title, where Staley referenced her faith during her post-game remarks.
In a social media post on Tuesday morning, Staley credited radio personality Charlamagne tha God with encouraging her to finally write the book. “I’d been approached about writing one before, but I kept pushing it off,” she said. “Charlamagne was persistent he wouldn’t let it go.” The book offers readers a deeper look into her personal life, beyond her celebrated basketball career.
According to Simon & Schuster, Uncommon Favor traces Staley’s path to success, spotlighting the obstacles she overcame from battling sexism in sports to navigating feelings of isolation in unfamiliar environments. Through these challenges, she developed resilience and maturity, qualities that have defined her career.
