Sources: Blue Jays make another offer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr…

Guerrero, who’s set to become a free agent after this season, had given the Blue Jays a spring training deadline to reach a new contract, insisting on a specific figure he wanted them to meet.

The 26-year-old, a fan favorite, told ESPN earlier this month that the latest offer his agents gave the team before his February 17 deadline was under $600 million. Reports suggest the two parties were about $50 million apart. Despite the gap, Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said on March 20 that he remained hopeful about locking Guerrero into a long-term deal. “I believe we’ll get it done. I think we’ll extend him,” Shapiro said. “We both clearly want the same thing.”

“Vlad wants to spend his entire career in Toronto. We want him to retire as a Blue Jay and become a franchise icon. That’s a strong foundation to work from.”

Guerrero agreed at the time, saying he was also hopeful.

“I’ve always felt positive about the situation,” Guerrero said. “I’m fine with it. I’ll keep working hard and stay optimistic. I’m not closing the door.” He added that his agents would continue discussions with the team while he stays focused on playing and supporting his teammates.
