Sheryl Swoopes Explains Azzi Fudd Opinion Overhaul After UConn NCAA Championship.

Although those familiar with women’s college basketball were already aware of UConn guard Azzi Fudd’s potential before the 2024–25 NCAA season, they recognized that the buzz around her stemmed more from what she could do than what she had done.

This was largely due to Fudd’s history of injuries during her time at UConn, including an ACL tear that sidelined her for an entire season. But during her nearly injury-free senior campaign in 2024–25, she silenced any doubts, becoming a dominant force and a key contributor to UConn’s national title win on April 6.

One of the many impressed by her NCAA Tournament run was WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes, who shared her thoughts during the April 8 episode of The Women’s Hoops Show.

“I’d seen [Fudd] play here and there, but with her injuries, she was in and out,” Swoopes said. “When I did catch her games, I thought, ‘She’s good.’ But I didn’t realize just how good she was.”

“Every time she touched the ball, I knew something was about to happen,” Swoopes added. “Her shot is just so smooth and pure.”

She continued, “Azzi Fudd, let me say this: I’m a fan. And I’m sorry I didn’t fully understand your game before. But what you showed us on April 6? With Paige Bueckers graduating, don’t think you all can’t do this again.”

High praise from Swoopes someone who knows exactly what it takes to win championships.
