Local authorities reported that two individuals were shot on Friday during celebrations for the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The incident occurred at 23rd and Spring Garden Streets in the Spring Garden neighborhood, according to CBS News. Police have not yet provided details about the victims’ conditions or the cause of the shooting. Newsweek has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department for a statement.
The area was crowded with Eagles fans celebrating the team’s win, as city officials had estimated over a million people would attend the parade. A CBS News helicopter captured footage of the scene, showing people scattering near an ambulance and a gurney positioned behind a truck, though it was unclear if anyone was on it.
The shooting took place near the Law Enforcement Health Benefits building, close to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the parade concluded. According to the Citizen app, a dispute may have led to the incident, and police recovered a firearm from the sidewalk. The app also reported that the two victims were women, both shot in the legs and believed to be in stable condition.
Elsewhere on the parade route, along Broad Street, a man wearing a Spider-Man hoodie reportedly robbed someone at gunpoint, according to Citizen app transcripts.
In a separate incident during the celebration, Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman sustained a forehead injury from a stray beer can, leaving him bloodied. Photos of Roseman with a cut on his head circulated widely on social media.
This shooting comes one year after a similar tragedy during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade, where one person was killed and 22 others wounded by gunfire. Additionally, 18 people were hospitalized for non-gunshot injuries. Four individuals, including two juveniles, were charged in connection with that shooting.
