Sad News: Italian skier Franzoso dies after training crash.

Italian skier Matteo Franzoso has passed away after a training accident in Chile on Saturday.

The 25-year-old suffered a severe head injury when he hit a fence during training at La Parva and was placed in a medically induced coma at a hospital in Santiago, where he later died.

Franzoso, who would have turned 26 on Tuesday, made his World Cup debut in December 2021 and competed in 17 events. His best World Cup result came in 2023, finishing 28th in the super-G at Cortina d’Ampezzo.

“This is a devastating loss for his family and for our sport,” said Italian winter sports federation (FISI) president Flavio Roda, stressing the need to do everything possible to prevent such tragedies.

His death follows that of Italian junior champion Matilde Lorenzi, who died last year after a fall in Val Senales.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) expressed that it was “deeply saddened” by the news.
