Sad News: Dutch runner Maureen Koster hospitalized after hitting head on track and falling unconscious during race..

Dutch runner Maureen Koster was hospitalized after being knocked unconscious and sustaining a mild concussion during the 3,000m final at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, on Sunday.

The two-time Olympian fell around the 1,000m mark after being tripped by other competitors. Replays showed the 32-year-old hitting the track hard, with her head bouncing off the surface. She appeared to lose consciousness immediately and was quickly attended to by medics as the race continued. Koster was later taken to the hospital, where Dutch Athletics confirmed she was awake and responsive.

Reflecting on the incident, Koster shared on Instagram: “It still feels unreal what happened last night. Thankfully, aside from a mild concussion, a few bruises, and a broken heart, I’m fine. Really hope to be back on my feet soon!”

Melissa Courtney-Bryant, Koster’s former training partner and eventual silver medalist, described the chaotic race as “absolute carnage.” She recalled feeling constant pressure from behind and hearing Koster’s fall, saying, “I’m pretty sure I heard her scream. It put everyone on edge, and the race felt more aggressive than usual.”

Ireland’s Sarah Healy ultimately took gold in the event.

Koster, who previously won silver in the 3,000m at the 2015 European Indoor Championships, had looked strong in qualifying, finishing second in her heat before her unfortunate fall in the final.
