Ronnie O’Sullivan overcame a slow start to secure a 6–2 victory over Sanderson Lam at the International Championship, despite not being at his best.
Lam opened strongly, taking a 2–0 lead with a fine 116 clearance, but O’Sullivan quickly regained control to seal the match and continue his pursuit of the one major title missing from his illustrious career.
Earlier, Judd Trump avenged his loss to Matthew Stevens at the Xi’an Grand Prix by winning 6–3. Trump’s top break of 105 put him 5–1 ahead before Stevens briefly rallied with runs of 81 and 83, though it wasn’t enough to turn the match around.
Ireland’s Aaron Hill also advanced to the second round after receiving a walkover from Ali Carter, who withdrew citing “personal reasons,” as he had done at the Northern Ireland Open. Hill will next face England’s Zak Surety in the last 16 on Tuesday.
