If you’re hoping West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez will name a starting quarterback by the end of spring practice, you might be disappointed.
The competition for the starting role is expected to extend into fall camp and possibly even into August for several reasons. First, there isn’t much full-contact, 11-on-11 work during the spring. Second, roster changes could still occur through the transfer portal in April. Lastly, the quarterbacks will likely develop significantly over the next few months as they adjust to the system and build chemistry with their teammates.
Despite the uncertainty, Rodriguez isn’t worried about his quarterback group. “I like our quarterback room from a conscientious standpoint. I mean, those guys really are eager. Of all the positions we have, I mean, everybody always worries about the quarterback position, I feel really good about the quarterback room. Real good. We’ll be okay there.”
At this point, the frontrunners appear to be left-handed quarterbacks Nicco Marchiol and Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson. Interestingly, the last time Rodriguez was West Virginia’s head coach, he had a left-handed QB named Pat White, and that turned out pretty well.
However, another contender in the race is Charlotte transfer Max Brown. Brown, who began his career at Florida, played in six games, completing 19 of 28 passes for 192 yards. His time at Charlotte was hampered by injuries and a lack of support, but he remains in the mix for the starting job.
