West Virginia running backs coach Chad Scott, who has been working under Rich Rodriguez, may soon be on the move. Although Rodriguez initially planned to retain Scott to continue developing players like Jahiem White and assist with recruiting, those plans may now be in doubt.
According to a national report from 247 Sports, Scott has emerged as the frontrunner for the running backs coach position at Texas. Rodriguez previously expressed his appreciation for Scott’s contributions at WVU, highlighting his energy, strong relationships with players, and ability to develop talent. “I have an appreciation and respect for the job that Chad has done here at West Virginia,” Rodriguez said. “He brings a high level of energy and has a history of building relationships and developing players. I look forward to having him as a member of our staff.”
Scott joined WVU in 2019 alongside former head coach Neal Brown and has since been a key figure in the program. Over the years, he has held multiple roles, including co-offensive coordinator (2019-21), run game coordinator (2022-23), and offensive coordinator (2024). He also served as the interim head coach for WVU’s Frisco Bowl appearance last month.
During his time at WVU, Scott helped Leddie Brown achieve consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2020 and 2021 and played a crucial role in recruiting and developing CJ Donaldson and Jahiem White, who combined for over 1,500 yards in each of the last two seasons. While Donaldson recently announced his transfer to Ohio State, White has yet to decide his future. Retaining Scott could improve WVU’s chances of keeping White on the roster.
Notably, Scott has built WVU’s running back corps the traditional way without relying on the transfer portal. Every running back he has coached at WVU has been a high school recruit he personally scouted and developed, including Donaldson, who was originally recruited as a tight end before transitioning to running back.
