New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and team executives consulted a wide range of head coaching candidates about the future of Aaron Rodgers during their interview process.
According to NFL insider Diana Russini, the overwhelming consensus among those interviewed was that the Jets should part ways with the four-time MVP. Speaking on *The Rich Eisen Show*, Russini explained, “Most of the candidates were asked directly by Woody, ‘Do you think we should stick with Aaron Rodgers?’ And the response was unanimous: ‘No. You guys need to move on.’”
With one year remaining on his three-year contract, Rodgers was informed of the team’s decision to go in a different direction. The Jets confirmed the move in a statement on X, writing, “We have informed Aaron Rodgers that we will be moving in a different direction at quarterback.”
Before the decision was finalized, Rodgers had discussions with newly hired head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. However, the two sides failed to reach an agreement, with Rodgers’ off-field routine being a major sticking point.
“So while the new regime considered keeping him, nearly every coaching candidate shared the same viewpoint,” Russini added. “And from what I’m hearing around the league, nobody is questioning why the Jets let him go.”
The Jets conducted interviews with at least 16 candidates before officially hiring Glenn as their head coach on January 22.
