The Auburn Tigers have officially parted ways with head coach Hugh Freeze, following a disappointing 10–3 home loss to Kentucky in Week 10 of the 2025 college football season. Freeze, who led the program for just two full years, becomes the fourth SEC head coach dismissed before season’s end.
The Freeze era in Auburn was marked by inconsistency and frustration. Despite competitive performances against elite opponents, the Tigers continually fell short in key moments, leaving fans disillusioned.
Now, the attention turns to who might replace him. Among the names drawing buzz is Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, widely regarded as one of the top young minds in college football. Schumann, who has coached some of Georgia’s most dominant defensive units including the championship-winning 2021 defense — has been linked to several head coaching openings this season.
Earlier this year, Schumann’s defense stifled Auburn’s offense, holding them to just 10 points in a 20–10 Georgia victory, marking the Bulldogs’ ninth straight win in the rivalry. Although Schumann has not expressed public interest in the Auburn job, his reputation and experience make him a compelling option as the Tigers begin their search.
Another name surfacing in early discussions is James Franklin, the former Penn State head coach and ex-Vanderbilt leader, who boasts prior SEC experience.
As Auburn’s coaching search unfolds, speculation will continue to swirl. Whether the next hire is Schumann, Franklin, or another emerging candidate, the Tigers are clearly looking for a fresh start after a turbulent stretch under Freeze.
