At a rally on April 7 celebrating the UConn Huskies’ NCAA championship win, head coach Geno Auriemma shared a story about something that happened just hours after their April 6 victory.
“We’re downstairs on the patio, and I start looking around, counting all the former UConn players who were there, just hanging out together like a group,” Auriemma recalled. “I was watching them, counting them,” he added, eventually realizing there were 27 national titles represented among the alumni present.
One of those former stars was UConn legend Rebecca Lobo. During her April 11 appearance on the Good Game With Sarah Spain podcast, Lobo revealed a funny detail that Auriemma left out.
“It was probably around 2 a.m. when Paige [Bueckers] came down,” Lobo said. “She joined the group of older players sitting around, and Coach looked at her and joked, ‘Oh, you’ve got one championship and now you think you belong down here?’”
Lobo continued, “Then he points at me and tells Paige, ‘Go sit next to her you both only have one.’”

Auriemma, known for his playful ribbing, took the opportunity to tease both Bueckers and Lobo. Despite her legendary status, Lobo who won her lone title in 1995, Auriemma’s first ended up the punchline of a classic Auriemma quip.
